May has been all about getting started. The Spring has sprung here and the work at APROP also sprang into life!

At the beginning of the month our chosen builder was selected and mid-month he and his team started the work. In as little as two weeks they have made a great start. A new back wall has been built, with the top third being built with air bricks. This was an important design choice for us, making sure the dogs stay dry when it rains, but also to ensure that the air can flow freely in the Summer months, keeping the kennel cool.

The roof has already been refitted. Where possible we are re-using materials that we already have, its both a way to minimise our costs and to minimise waste. Our builder came up with the idea to cover the existing roof with a layer of special concrete made with volcanic rocks. Its amazingly light and acts as a fantastic insulator. It will also ensure our roof doesn’t leak anymore. Thats what we like, dry and happy dogs!

Work next week starts on concreting the outside are and then putting up individual runs for each of the four kennels. We are excited, it is taking shape nicely.

There are always day to day maintenance tasks taking place and we have been focusing on getting much needed shade in place for the outside areas where our dogs like to play and laze about. Everyone helps our here, its a multitasking and multi skilled team of volunteers!

Thank you to everyone who is making this possible for us … Our fundraiser to help towards the cost of the quarantine kennel is running until the end of the month. You can find it here, should you wish to contribute we would be very grateful indeed.

I have been volunteering at APROP since April 2018. You will normally find me there on Tuesday mornings, helping to care for, clean and feed the dogs. In 2019 I adopted Barney, a Podenco from APROP. In fact I have taken a distinct liking to the Podencos and some call me the Pod-Mother! I am also part of the adoptions team the fundraising team and I help by fostering dogs too. Helping animals brings me much joy and happiness into my life.
